Background

A user had a large number of files spread across several sub-folders within a folder. They needed to find every Word document within these folders and retrieve the word count for these files.

They wanted to list the folder they existed in, the name of the file and the word count of the file.

In total, there were 250 Word Documents across 12 sub folders.

Solution

We designed a script that could loop through every sub-folder, find every word document (amongst every other document), document the name of the sub folder it existed in, the name of the file – and then open the word document. It then retrieved the word count for the word document and placed that in the column alongside.

For 250 documents, it took approximately 4 minutes to complete (dependant on PC), and saved approximately 5 hours.
